In the tradition of popular K-Dramas like Business Proposal, Our Blues, My Liberation Notes, Sh**ting Stars, and Love All Play, BTS has once again made an unexpected cameo in a new K-Drama, Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area.
Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area is based on a Spanish crime drama television series, Money Heist (La Casa De Papel). The K-Drama is a continuation of the story told in Money Heist, where a mysterious man known only as the “Professor” recruits a group of eight people for a daring mission to steal money from the Royal Mint of Spain.
Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area takes place in the same fictional universe as the original with the same basic premise of the “Professor” establishing a group of people to plan and execute a heist.
So far, BTS has made two appearances in the first episode of the K-Drama. One character, who goes by Tokyo (played by actress Jeon Jong Seo), introduces viewers to her character by identifying herself as a member of the BTS ARMY.
She dances to BTS’s “DNA” while walking around.
Tokyo explains that ARMY are “all over the world.” Including North Korea, where she lives.
She believes it’s “only natural” that she became a fan of BTS since she’d “been secretly watching and listening to South Korean dramas and music.”
Tokyo adds that “the only difference between [her] and the other ARMY [is that she] had to join the real army.”
The other reference to BTS in the K-Drama is through a news broadcast that mentions that BTS will be holding a concert “in Pyongyang next month.”
Pyongyang is a city in North Korea, and the news broadcast suggests that, in this fictional world, the fact that the BTS concert “has already sold out [suggests] that the cultural exchange between the neighboring countries is happening much quicker than expected.”
