Monterey Park is a city on the outskirts of Los Angeles. According to US Census data, the area comprises more than 65% of people of Asian descent, with many residents originating from China or being first-generation Asian Americans.
The festivities gather tens of thousands of people from the surrounding areas to celebrate the Lunar New Year and had planned for two days of celebrations, with the second day being canceled after the shooting.
California governor Gavin Newsom tweeted about the tragedy, saying, “Monterey Park should have had a night of joyful celebration of the Lunar New Year.”
Monterey Park should have had a night of joyful celebration of the Lunar New Year. Instead, they were the victims of a horrific and heartless act of gun violence.
Our hearts mourn as we learn more about the devastating acts of last night. We are monitoring the situation closely.
