Chinese Couple Is Charged For The Murder And Torture Of A Korean Streamer In Cambodia Their Identities Are Revealed
On June 11, it was reported that a Korean woman in her 30s was found dead in Cambodia on June 6. It was later confirmed that the woman was a streamer, or BJ (broadcasting jockey), named BJ Ah Yeong (also known as Byun Ah Yeong).
BJ Ah Yeong visited Cambodia with a friend on June 2, and two days later, her body was discovered wrapped in a red cloth in a pond in a village near Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia.
According to the French media AFP (Agence France Presse), on June 14 (local time), Cambodian prosecutors indicted the Chinese couple, Lai Wenshao, 30, and Cai Huijuan, 39, on charges of murdering BJ Ah Yeong. The couple was arrested after their fingerprints on the cloth the victim was wrapped in verified their identities.
The couple testified to police that BJ Ah Yeong was receiving treatment at their hospital on June 4 but suddenly had a seizure and died, so they abandoned her body.
The prosecutors stated that the crime charge for the couple was “homicide accompanied by torture.” If found guilty, the couple could face life sentences. The specific details regarding the torture charges have not been disclosed.
The cause of BJ Ah Yeong’s death has also not yet been determined. While Cambodian police believe that an autopsy is necessary to determine the cause of death, it was reported that her family was against it. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Korea announced on June 13 that the Cambodian authorities are investigating the case and providing necessary support to her family.
Meanwhile, BJ Ah Yeong was a streamer on AfreecaTV and an influencer with over 260,000 followers on Instagram. In March, she announced she was stepping away from her public persona to “live as a normal person.” She was 33 years old at the time of her passing.
