Lee Hi

These artists were all scheduled to perform at the three-day-long Good Vibes Festival 2023 (also known as GVF2023) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The 1975 headlined on Friday, July 21. Lead singer Matty Healy took the stage but regretted the band’s choice to perform in the country due to the government’s anti-LGBTQIA+ laws. LGBTQIA+ activity is illegal in Malaysia so that citizens can face up to 20 years of imprisonment.

I made a mistake. When we were booking shows, I wasn’t looking into it. I don’t see the f*cking point, right. I do not see the point of inviting the 1975 to a country and then telling us who we can have sex with.

— Matty Healy

After Healy’s speech, he kissed his bandmate Ross MacDonald as the rest of the band played the song “I Like America & America Likes Me.” Just 30 minutes into the set, officials escorted them off stage, and Healy left, saying, “All right, we just got banned from Kuala Lumpur. See you later.”

Unfortunately, you don’t get a set of loads of uplifting songs because I’m f*cking furious. And that’s not fair on you because you’re not representative of your government. Because you’re young people, and I’m sure a lot of you are gay and progressive and cool.

— Matty Healy

The festival had only just begun. So, other performing artists, such as DPR IAN and DPR LIVE were arriving.

Yet, the rest of the scheduled performers would no longer be allowed to perform because of Matty Healy’s actions. The official social media accounts for Good Vibes Festival announced that the festival was canceled due to the Ministry of Communications and Digital.

Fans of the artists yet to perform expressed their anger and disappointment, especially since many had traveled to Malaysia. DPR IAN, DPR LIVE, and Lee Hi were all performing the next day, so their fans were arriving only to find out the bad news.

Malaysians, including members of the LGBTQIA+ community, have also voiced their outrage about the situation. They have criticized Matty Healy’s “careless” actions and “White Savior Complex” that will result in repercussions for innocent and especially queer people who live in the country.

#stitch with @cabi ps: that’s not to say that Malaysian’s are all homophobic, as there is a queer community and I believe a lot of Gen-Z/Millenial Malaysia’s are more woke and accepting of LGBTQ+ folks, but Malaysian are all aware of what our government systems are like and how acts like thse can actually hurt marginalized communities more than help them. #the1975 #goodvibesfestival #gvf2023

On Saturday July 22, The 1975’s Matty Healy was seen kissing his bandmate on stage and criticising the country’s LGBT laws, an incident that led to the cancellation of Good Vibes Festival by the Malaysian government. The consequences of the lead singer’s actions have led to an uproar amongst fans and concert attendees alike, as the band recently announced the cancellation of shows in Indonesia and Taiwan. #fyp #goodvibesfestival #1975 #malaysia
