Throughout the years, many groups have debuted following a competition trainees are pulled to compete in. Shows like Boys Planet and the Produce series are one form of this show that pulls trainees from multiple companies to debut in temporary groups.
Another version of survival programs are ones entertainment companies do with just their trainees to debut permanent groups. Many times, the trainees that do not make the cut end up debuting and finding success separately, like Jeon Somi following her missing out on debuting with TWICE.
Another group many may not know was formed through a survival program is MONSTA X, who first appeared as trainees in No Mercy.
Trainees were eliminated to form the MONSTA X you know today, with some moving on to other labels and groups. One such trainee did seem to have moved on after a long break but recently went through unforeseen difficulties.
By the final episode of No Mercy, nine trainees were left standing for the possible debut, including one named Choi Seokwon.
Ultimately, Seokwon and another trainee, #GUN, were eliminated, leaving many heartbroken.
After the show, Seokwon completed his military service before returning to trainee status. Sometime before December 2020, Seokwon moved to Rain Company, where he was announced to be debuting as a member of the new boy group, Ciipher, under the stage name Tan.
Ciipher debuted on March 15, 2021, with “I Like You,” joining the other fourth-generation acts to debut that year.
Ciipher would release two more mini-albums before entering a period of inactivity in the summer of 2022. Not many updates about the group were shared until it was announced that members Keita and Tag would participate in Boys Planet, though neither would debut in the final group.
After Hyunbin’s elimination from Fantasy Boys in June, fans were disappointed that Ciipher’s inactivity continued despite the new interest, leading to complaints against Rain Company CEO Rain.
The complaints only increased after it was announced on August 9 that Tan, along with Tag, Dohwan, and Won, had left the group after remaining inactive for over a year.
Since the announcement, Tag has been active on social media, showing fans he is okay despite the unfortunate ending of his time in Ciipher. While he has not mentioned any new plans, Tag was featured as a solo artist on the OST for Nara The Socialite Wannabe, a direction he may go in.
While he has gone through some misfortunes in his career, we hope for the best in Tan’s future!
