There are more than a few differences between Koreans and Americans that cause culture shock. Weddings are part of that, with American TikTok user Elsie (@itsjustelsieyall) pointing out a few major differences between Korean and American weddings in a viral video.
1. Wedding Venues
In America, weddings can vary from large-scale overseas events to private backyard ceremonies. Whether it’s the beach or a fancy hotel, couples pick out every detail to make the venue perfect. However, Koreans aren’t as focused on the details.
For Korean weddings, most couples choose to get married at wedding halls or hotels, which already have specific floors decorated for the ceremony. They don’t have to worry about choosing every little detail because everything is already prepared.
2. Wedding Party
In America, it’s common for the bride to choose a Maid of Honor and bridesmaids. The groom also chooses a Best Man and groomsmen to stay by their side on the special day.
Korean weddings don’t do that at all. Instead, the wedding party is usually limited to the couple’s parents.
3. Wedding Dresses
Like the wedding venue, American brides emphasize buying the right dress and customizing every detail to make it perfect. Korean brides take the opposite approach.
Unless they’re a celebrity or wealthy, Koreans don’t buy or customize their wedding dress at all. Instead, they rent them for the big day.
4. Flower Girls/Ring Bearer
And while Americans have children as flower girls and ring bearers, those traditions don’t usually happen at Korean weddings.
5. Wedding Reception
After their wedding ceremony, American couples usually hold a reception afterward to have a first dance as a married couple and cut the wedding cake together.
Koreans don’t have a reception at all. Instead, everyone gathers in a hall to eat a buffet-style meal.
6. Wedding Gifts
Lastly, it’s common for American couples to create an online registry of things they need, making it easy for guests to buy them wedding gifts. On the other hand, Korean couples keep it simple by asking for money. Not only do guests get a ticket to the after-wedding buffet for their cash gift, but it also makes it easier for the couple to spend the money on whatever they choose.
While Americans are focused on making every detail personal and unforgettable for their weddings, Koreans focus more on the moment and saving money for the future.
