ENA and SBS Plus’s I Am Solo Season 16 star Sang Cheol (pseudonym) recently gained attention when fans realized he unfollowed a fellow contestant and an ex-girlfriend.
I Am Solo is a Korean reality dating show where single men and women spend four nights and five days together to find love. When they choose their match, they go by pseudonyms and reveal their real names in the final episode. The current season is a “divorced singles” special where all the participants are divorced or widowed singles. This season is the most popular season of the show yet because of the drama among participants both on and off-screen.
One of the participants who received a lot of attention on the show was Sang Cheol, who grew up in the U.S. and works at the aircraft company Boeing Co. He flew to Korea to find his partner, hoping she would move to the States with him.
After the show, Sang Cheol gained many fans. They recently noticed that he had unfollowed Young Cheol (pseudonym), another contestant from I Am Solo Season 16 with whom he was friends.
Young Cheol recently posted an intimate photoshoot with Byun Hye Jin, a contestant who appeared in last year’s season of another dating show, Love After Divorce. The photo gained a lot of attention as netizens were wondering what it was for, and many expressed their distaste for the concept.
In October, Byun Hye Jin and Sang Cheol made headlines when they went to the zoo together, and many wondered if they were friends or in a relationship. In his recent Instagram Live, Sang Cheol explained everything.
They’re good people. They’re theh two who treated me the best in Korea. It’s not because something went wrong because I broke up with Byun Hye Jin before.

He confessed that he was in a serious relationship with Byun Hye Jin but broke up when he returned to the U.S.
I was in a serious relationship with Byun Hye Jin, and we had a clean and good breakup when I came back to the U.S. People close to me knew we were dating. We blessed each other and broke up nicely, but later, I felt like there was something between her and Young Cheol.
— Sang Cheol
He admitted that if his prediction were accurate, remaining friends with Young Cheol wouldn’t be easy.
If that’s the case, then it’s difficult for me and Young Cheol to be friends. It could be my misundersanding. I’m just trying to step back from the situation when I’m feeling uncomfortable. All I can do is cut ties with the two and leave.
— Sang Cheol
Sang Cheol explained that he felt some unidentified sparks between Young Cheol and Byun Hye Jin, but the two never confirmed nor denied dating rumors.
They got along well like brother and sister, and without me knowing, something unknown was flowing. And I was awkwardly involved in that flow. After they did their photo shoot, people asked them, ‘Are you two dating?’ but Young Cheol and Hye Jin didn’t clear up all that noise.
— Sang Cheol
Sang Cheol then shared that he asked Young Cheol directly if he and his ex-girlfriend were dating. The answer he received made him suspicious, and he eventually unfollowed them to prepare himself for what he believed was coming soon.
Today, when I asked, Young Cheol said they weren’t dating. The answer was not typical, and it felt strange. They might be trying to coordinate the timing and announce the relationship. It could be a sitaution where they wait for the right timing for the public and their image. I unfollowed to prevent myself from getting involved in a foolish situation in advance.
— Sang Cheol
Sang Cheol shared that he was closest to Young Cheol in Season 16 of the show, so if Young Cheol were to meet someone he dates, they “couldn’t face each other.” However, he asked fans not to speak ill of the two because they were people who “sincerely cared for [him].”
Even if there is something between them, it’s not wrong. I have already broken up with her.
— Sang Cheol
Following Sang Cheol’s confessions, Byun Hye Jin told him not to share other people’s news.
Don’t casually spread other people’s stories. Even if you share the story from the parties involved, it’s not very nice. If you didn’t hear it directly, spare your words. If you’re curious, ask directly.
— Byun Hye Jin
Although the spiciest season of I Am Solo ended, the drama between the contestants—and even one from another dating show—continues.
